Modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting drug used to reduce excessive sleepiness caused by sleep disorders like narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea. It assists people who have irregular sleep patterns in the body, such as shift work, in staying awake. However, it does not cure these sleep disorders and is not going to remove drowsiness. Modafinil is not to be used in overcoming normal feelings of fatigue or to delay sleep in people who do not have sleep disorders.
Modafinil works on neurotransmitters in the brain that are associated with regulating the sleep/wake cycle, but the exact mechanism of its actions is unknown.
